- The Mirage was built on the former site of the Castaways Hotel and Casino. At a cost of $620 million, it was the most expensive hotel and casino ever built when it opened in November 1989.
- The Mirage has 3,044 rooms, including 281 suites. The casino floor covers more than 100,000 square feet to house table games and slots.
- Behind the front desk stands a 20,000 gallon saltwater aquarium with about 1,000 aquatic creatures in residence. Sharks, eels and puffer fish swim around to entertain guests. Outside the hotel, the newly reinvented volcano experience sends fire 60 feet into the air, accompanied by music from Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart.
- The Revolution Lounge features Beatles-themed psychedelic decor that also adorns its unisex restrooms. The Mirage was one of the casinos robbed by Danny Ocean (George Clooney) in "Ocean's Eleven."
- Illusionists Siegfried & Roy performed at the Mirage with their white tigers from 1990 to 2003, until Roy Horn was severely injured by one of the tigers on stage, and the show ended.
