The 2010 website of the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) reports that there are 4,601 adult daycare programs operating in the United States, and the need is growing. This industry can be profitable, but you must operate within state rules, regulations and meet certain requirements. Most states require adult daycare services to be licensed. Some require only certification. Others require both licensing and certification. - Determine the requirement for your state, and submit an application to your state licensing office. Apply for the type of care you plan to provide and obtain any additional licensing for care you may want to provide in the future. Before filling out the application, make sure to get all relevant requirements from your licensing office.
- Each state has different staff requirements for individuals providing care to the adult residents. These requirements depend on the type of daycare service. If you are offering specialized care you may need to have fully trained nurses. Daycare services also need a qualified administrator, food service and custodial staff. Adult daycare services must follow staff-to-participant ratios set forward by each state. All staff will have to submit to a criminal background check.
